NUIG Students scrap Rag Week

The Student Union of the National University Of Ireland, Galway, have voted to scrap their annual ‘Rag Week’ , a series of events and fundraisers that include pub crawls, club nights out, parties and sponsored events.

The Union voted against the prospect of continuing the famous ‘Rag Week’ in return for a series of concessions which will be extended by the University’s authorities.

The concessions include:

  • An extra €60’000 per year for the Student Union.
  • A higher contribution to the Student Assistance Fund.
  • An abolition of the €2 charge to use the student gym.
  • A guarantee not to impose fees to visit a doctor or nurse at the Student Health Unit.
  • Extra noticeboards

University President James Brown had highlighted the bad media attention the celebrations bring and called for the week to be scrapped, but many students on campus argue it is ‘part of college life and culture’.

omg, I can’t believe that they are not doing Rag-week this year. I can remember years ago going to that in the 80s it was one of those forgotten weekends.

  2. I found this to be really profound. Keep it up, I hope to see more 😀
